Rory was wrong. I’d rather watch Lee Westwood than almost any PGA Tour star https://golf.vmondeika.com/rory-was-wrong-id-rather-watch-lee-westwood-than-almost-any-pga-tour-star/ Thu, 10 Sep 2026 19:33:41 +0000 https://golf.vmondeika.com/rory-was-wrong-id-rather-watch-lee-westwood-than-almost-any-pga-tour-star/ Hoards of abuse were thrown at players who joined LIV Golf, as the Saudi-funded start-up burst on the scene four years ago.

Homegrown heroes like Lee Westwood and Ian Poulter were slammed by some fans for leaving the European Tour and taking big-money offers.

But whatever expletives you’ve uttered about them since then, there is no question of the presence they still carry in the game, and the value they bring to golf tournaments.

Value is the word mentioned in a question to Rory McIlroy when he was asked about LIV players returning to the PGA Tour, as it seems the game may be up for the once-resurgent rebel circuit.

Here is what McIlroy was asked at the BMW Championship in August:

Scottie Scheffler was asked about the possibility of LIV guys coming back and whether they bring value. In your opinion, are there guys, if it goes away, that should be allowed back?

His answer:

I’d argue: have they brought value to LIV?

This perspective isn’t quite accurate.

ALSO: Show me the money! How much has each LIV player made since signing up?

Was Rory right to question the value of LIV Golfers?

As the summer heatwaves fade and burned-brown courses spring back to wet green, we enter a period when LIV rebels have always plied their trade and shared fairways with players they once shared most weeks.

In autumn, they’re mostly free to do what they like, as long as they have exemptions and invitations, and that has meant playing on the DP World Tour (DPWT), formerly the European Tour.

Both Brooks Koepka and Dustin Johnson have trekked to Scotland for the Alfred Dunhill in recent years, for example, as have Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton. And despite the cynicism of this most turbulent period of LIV’s existence, LIV defectors draw crowds, and the events are all the better for it.

Interest comes from players who you care about, who have made you feel something in your time watching golf. In Europe, those times have often come from the Ryder Cup.

This is why the older heads who joined LIV, like Westwood, Poulter, Sergio Garcia and Graeme McDowell still spark interest.

“I really don’t care what people think, to be perfectly honest. “It (invitation to play in the Dunhill) illustrates the fact that people like LIV players in their events. Promoters and sponsors, no matter which tour they’re on, they bring quality to tournaments,” said Westwood, speaking at LIV’s season finale in Indianapolis.

“I heard Rory’s comments. I thought Scottie (Scheffler) answered the question well, and Rory’s answer was just typical of Rory, really – it wasn’t well thought out. There are a lot of players on this tour (LIV Golf) who bring value to tournaments.”

It’s a sorry state where two of Europe’s greatest players are at odds with each other. One might argue Westwood’s move to LIV in 2022 began the spiky spiral; one might say McIlroy’s overly protective actions for the established tours are responsible, too.

Referring back to the Dunhill, we should rejoice that players Westwood and Poulter have entered this year.

McIlroy’s comments are tinged with disrespect towards those who shaped the DPWT – the very ladder McIlroy put his first steps on towards the PGA Tour and Grand Slam immortality.

Give me Lee Westwood over the vast majority of the PGA Tour any day

Westwood and Poulter forged their legendary careers on the DPWT, and although some goodwill might have been lost in verbal missteps and unpaid (then paid) fines, the tour and Europeans golf fans have plenty to thank them for, with the excitement they’ve brought over the years, especially at the Ryder Cup.

Westwood turned pro in 1993 and has won 25 times on the DPWT, which was named the European Tour for most of his tenure. Only McIlroy sits above him on the career money list, and only seven players, one of them being Tiger Woods, have more wins.

In the summer, players like Westwood are often asked if they will compete in Final Qualifying for The Open. That is because he is Lee Westwood, and he still has a lot to give to these tournaments.

Heck, Final Open Qualifying has basically become Sergio Garcia Day – another icon of European golf who brings people to the rope line.

In 2025 at The Open, Westwood played a stretch of nine holes at Royal Portrush in 29 shots. At 53, the Worksop man has shown incredible longevity by keeping fit, active and motivated to still play his best.

If he were on The Open Leaderboard, I’d be looking for his name well before the likes of Cameron Young, Russell Henley, and Sam Burns – all players in the world’s top 10 and part of a PGA Tour roster that McIlroy is never shy to sing the praises of.

They just don’t evoke the same interest and emotion.

When I see Westwood, I see Muirfield 2013, when it looked so much like he would win The Open. I see the 2010 Masters when he was destined for the Green Jacket. Of course, there was Turnberry in 2009, when an 18th-hole three-putt cost him a playoff for the Claret Jug with Tom Watson and Stewart Cink.

The same memories could be reeled off for Poulter, Garcia, and McDowell. Cynics might say they have been out of sight in the lucrative LIV wilderness, and out of mind, but in their hearts, surely, the memories these players have created are too great to forget.

Just because of pro golf’s spat in the last four years, just because of some cross-words, we cannot ignore what these stalwarts still bring to the game and the memories they evoke.

Who is the highest paid women’s golfer and what is the gap to the PGA Tour? https://golf.vmondeika.com/who-is-the-highest-paid-womens-golfer-and-what-is-the-gap-to-the-pga-tour/ Fri, 04 Sep 2026 16:54:48 +0000 https://golf.vmondeika.com/who-is-the-highest-paid-womens-golfer-and-what-is-the-gap-to-the-pga-tour/ In 2026, one of the sport’s most significant debates ceases to end and is starker than ever.

Following the CME Group Tour Championship at the end of 2025, Jeeno Thitikul led the LPGA Tour money list, having earned $7,578,330 across the season.

While this is a sum the majority of humans can’t imagine having, Thitikul’s year-long earnings would have been good for 20th place in the PGA Tour money list of 2025.

This was a fraction of Scottie Scheffler‘s monstrous bank balance of $27,659,500 across 20 events. Although rewarding Thitikul with an enormous $4 million cheque for winning last year’s season-ending finale is a vast upscale investment in the women’s game, there is still a significant disparity between the two spheres.

2025 was another year of dominance for Scheffler, who won seven times, including the PGA Championship and The Open. He was handsomely rewarded in the PGA Tour’s grossly inflated financial climate. Even despite a slight down year on course, where he won only three times (low for his standards!), he scooped the $10 million purse at the Tour Championship.

Scottie Scheffler | Source: Getty Images
Scottie Scheffler | Source: Getty Images

Scheffler’s excellence is becoming more regular, but each of his last two full seasons could be compared to Nelly Korda’s 2024 season. Her third win at the Annika at the end of that season capped off a seven-trophy haul that included a PGA Championship win.

Her on-course earnings for that year? $4,391,930. Korda won’t have sniffed at that, but she and Scheffler rose to similar levels of superstardom in that 12 months, and there is a cavern between what their performances were worth in currency.

What is also remarkable, as an example, is that Rory McIlroy won $4.5 million at the PGA Tour’s flagship event, the 2025 Players Championship, alone, which means he won more at this event than Korda won in the entirety of 2024.

The PGA Tour has long offered big prize money. The organisation also has one of the sport’s most generous pension schemes. However, when LIV Golf was born in 2022, the circuit’s financial reserves were opened like Pandora’s Box, making $4 million in winner purses and $20 million in total prize funds the rule instead of the exception.

Scheffler’s dollar total for last year and previous seasons must account for the squeeze placed on the tour by the new Saudi-funded league and its compulsion to compete. But with more new money being pumped into golf, the LPGA Tour and Ladies European Tour are yet to taste the pie in the same way the men’s tour has.

10. Collin Morikawa – $9,994,628 (17)

22. Hideki Matsuyama – $6,088,207, the closest equivalent on the PGA Tour to LPGA Tour leader Nelly Korda.

The gap continues to grow between the PGA Tour and the LPGA Tour, with LIV’s emergence accelerating the trend. Nine players on the PGA Tour breached the $10 million mark in 2026 after the Tour Championship, with Scottie Scheffler reaching a staggering $30 million in prize money after his win at East Lake.

That’s nearly five times Korda’s winning in 2026. Both World Number One’s, but a chasm between them in their earnings.

Wedge History, Reimagined: Cleveland Golf Introduces the Limited Edition 588 Tour Action Wedge https://golf.vmondeika.com/wedge-history-reimagined-cleveland-golf-introduces-the-limited-edition-588-tour-action-wedge/ Mon, 01 Jun 2026 12:13:22 +0000 https://golf.vmondeika.com/wedge-history-reimagined-cleveland-golf-introduces-the-limited-edition-588-tour-action-wedge/

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif., – Cleveland Golf is bringing back one of the most influential wedges ever designed with the release of the Limited Edition 588 Tour Action Wedge. Originally introduced in May 1988, the 588 set the standard for tour-caliber wedge design. Now, that legendary shape returns, crafted once again to original specifications and enhanced with Cleveland Golf’s most advanced wedge technologies.

“From the very beginning, the 588 was built around feedback from the best players in the world,” said Roger Cleveland. “For this release, we stayed true to the original shaping and turf interaction that made it special, while integrating modern materials and technologies inside the club. It’s the same trusted look and performance, refined for today’s game.”

Few club designers have shaped the short game like Roger Cleveland. The 588 established a new standard for shaping, turf interaction, and control, going on to earn hundreds of professional victories and dozens of major championships. More than a successful product, the 588 became the blueprint for tour-caliber wedge design that still influences the category today.

Combining heritage craftsmanship with modern precision, the Limited Edition 588 Tour Action Wedges are built with Cleveland Golf’s proprietary Z-Alloy and equipped with ZipCore, HydraZip, UltiZip grooves, and Rotex Face Milling, blending the soul of the original with the best Cleveland Golf technology available today. The result is a wedge that honors the past while delivering the consistency, spin, and control demanded by today’s players.

The Limited Edition 588 Tour Action Wedge is offered as a three-club set: Gap (52°), Sand (56°), and Lob (60°), each ground to Roger Cleveland’s original specifications. Finished in a classic chrome, every set is presented in a premium collector’s box and includes a brushed brass plaque. Only 588 sets will be available nationwide.

“The 588 has always meant something special to me because of how golfers embraced it,” Cleveland continued. “Seeing players build real trust in that wedge, leaning on it in the moments that matter most was unforgettable. And now a new generation will have a chance to experience that too.”

The Limited Edition 588 Tour Action Wedge stands as a tribute to one of the biggest pioneers in golf history Roger Cleveland and faithfully recreated with modern performance technology for today’s player.

One of the best things you’ll read? A winless Tour pro’s letter to himself https://golf.vmondeika.com/one-of-the-best-things-youll-read-a-winless-tour-pros-letter-to-himself/ Fri, 29 May 2026 03:51:46 +0000 https://golf.vmondeika.com/one-of-the-best-things-youll-read-a-winless-tour-pros-letter-to-himself/

Patrick Rodgers is still here. He’s still going.

On the PGA Tour, over a dozen years as a pro, he’s winless, though, after a run in college where he won nearly everything. Folks have wondered. He’s wondered. Then late last year, Rodgers wrote a letter to himself — and it’s one of the best things you’ll read today, along with being the focus of a recently released (and wonderfully produced) video from the PGA Tour.

The letter’s penultimate paragraph?

I’m still here. I’m still going.

Below, you can watch the Tour’s video — the ending is a must-watch — and below that is the letter, which was shared by the Tour’s social media team

“I was one of the most accomplished college players of all time

“Yet 11 seasons and over 300 PGA Tour events later, I still have zero wins.

“That’s the story most people know.

“But it’s not the whole story.

“The struggle cut deeper than I ever imagined.

“Fighting for my card in 2014. The 8-footer for par to keep it in 2021. Four runner-up finishes, two playoff losses, and weeks spent trying to recover from each one. Every missed cut somehow felt like the worst one. Every bogey on the last left a pit in my stomach. Watching peers achieve the success I desperately chased chipped away at my ego and my belief.

“Hundreds of what-ifs.

“Thousands of hours of effort with seemingly nothing to show for it.

“And yet, I’m incredibly blessed. I play a game for a living. I’ve earned far more than I deserve. But none of that erases the internal battles, the weight of expectation, the fear of falling behind, the quiet pressure of survival. Golf can be beautiful — and brutally honest.

“So I had to redefine winning.

“When the outcomes I dreamed of didn’t arrive, I had to create a new scoreboard. I started asking harder questions:

“Where did my confidence crack?

“When did I fold under pressure?

“What risks was I afraid to take?

“That process — uncomfortable, humbling, honest — became its own form of victory.

“And life shifted, too. Two beautiful kids and a supportive wife taught me there’s more to being a ‘winner’ than making birdies. I walk through our front door and feel like I’ve already won something bigger than golf can offer.

“Through failure, I learned to love the process.

“Daily systems. Reps without applause. Quiet growth.

“That’s what grounds me.

“Maybe the struggle is the point.

“When the wins didn’t come in bunches, I had to ask myself why they mattered so much. And I realized: A trophy isn’t the end game. What I’m really chasing is discipline, teamwork and self-actualization. You can have all of those without holding anything on Sunday afternoon.

“Now, entering Year 12 on the PGA Tour, I feel more confident than ever, not because I expect my experience to be free from adversity. I know there will be weeks when nothing works. But I feel bulletproof from everything I’ve walked through. Struggle shapes you. Failure teaches you. And resilience becomes its own quiet superpower.
